today 16% of the people in the state of indiana are living in poverty. and for those we represent who are working today for one hour's worth of their labor, they're making 53 cents less today in real purchasing power than they did in 1977. today there are 6,643,000 less americans working at manufacturing, making a living wage, than there were in 1977. so the response is, let's take $1.5 billion out of an investment account where there are still 10 pending applications to try to make cars in this country more efficiently, more fuel efficient and more desirable for consumers, but earlier tonight we heard, don't worry, the chinese are going to help our car companies with financing. i'm affronted by that possibility. that's why we need this $1.5 billion, so maybe we could still make cars in the united states of america without the help of the chinese government. i think this is a wrong-headed approach. and then let's pile on, there's obviously a controversy about a solar company in california. i think perhaps it is a matter to be considered not only by overs

this comes from brandy and michael in spencer, indiana. >> growing concern among americans about size and scope of the federal government and infringement upon state and individual rights. >> if elected how do you plan to restore the federal government allow states to govern themselves? >> congressman what is your answer? >> obviously, it would take more than one individual. but the responsibility of the president would be to veto every single bill that violates the 10th amendment. that would be the solution. [ applause ] >> anything else? you have a little time left. [ laughing ] >> i'll tell you what, that is the subject that is crucial because government is too big in washington, d.c., we have no controls of spending, taxes, regulations no control in the federal reserve printing money. if we want government, whether it is medical care or whatever, it is proper to do it at the local level as well as our schools. there's no authority in the constitution to do so much what we're doing. there's no authority for them to run our schools. no authority to control our economy. and no author

he could lose indiana. don't think people know that's in play. he could lose north carolina, virginia. he'd still get past 270 electoral votes. >> where are the areas in florida where you think the president could gain ground? certainly in the polling we were looking at in florida about rick perry, for example, and the social security issues, it looks like the president -- certainly if rick perry's the nominee would be able to gain ground on the social security issue in florida. is there anything else he could do there? >> you know, elections in florida really are won in the middle. and it's the i-4 corridor from st. petersburg to daytona, which is really the swing voter area of florida. and that's really where obama's in trouble. those approval ratings among independent and swing voters are just as bad as they are among overall. so he's got a lot of work to do in that range. there's sort of a myth from 2008 that he won with a really hyped-up base and an excited base. he really won because he won independents. he won independents by 7 percentage
